I have been living with Melanoma for 20 years. It was insitu for about 18 years. Invasive but found extremely early. My surgeon was radical the last surgery. Clean margins so far! I have had 12 surgeries in those 20 years. I have 3 different doctors that each check me 3 times a year. I was clean for 5 years after my 1st surgery, Even was able to get a cancer insurance policy! I have been clean for a year. I am in a study program now called CT DNA or Circulating Tumor DNA. So far so good!

The problem is that the melanoma generally has shed cells into the blood. Mole, then apple size tumor in my right lung. The surgery with clean margins. Then I started opdivo. The tumors on my liver and kidney. Then opdivo immunotherapy and yervoy. Six months later cancer free. Now five years cancer free.

It is a good sign but not necessarily an indication the cancer is gone forever.

My dermatologist who discovered my melanoma ordered the DecisionDx-Melanoma test on my biopsy. I had no idea. The test came back with a low probability of metastasis and recurrence. The test is expensive (at least for my insurance) and as of now I am responsible for about $6,500 for it. However, the testing company said they will file another claim with the insurance company (BC of CA) and the dermo said he will provide them with more info. I am grateful for the test results. I am confident the claim will be greatly reduced. I see my dermo every 3 months for a full body exam looking for more suspicious spots. I will do this for the next 5 years (I am 60).

Oh Carolyn, I am so hoping this is a new and much better chapter for you. You’ve worked so hard. I just have to say. Thinking of you.
